Katerina Pravda

Artist member since 2022
Toronto/Collingwood, Ontario

Toronto-based contemporary visual artist Katerina Pravda creates environmentally-driven works characterized by bold color combinations and sensitively rendered subjects - chiefly animals, people, and their environment. Stylistically, Katerina's work often melts between the real, imagined, and surreal, creating an atmosphere that invites introspection and the shifting of personal perspectives. Both in her art and beyond, she is driven by the desire to restore harmony between people and animals in order to protect endangered species and their habitats, creating a beautiful world for all.

Katerina Pravda received her BFA with Distinction from Mount Allison University, Canada's top undergraduate university. She also studied at the University of Newcastle in Australia during an international exchange. She has been exhibiting since 2013 and was awarded the prestigious Murray Jacob Clerkson Award in 2015. Her artwork can be found in private collections throughout North America, Europe and Australia.

Q+A

How long have you been creating art?

All my life! Started getting serious about it when I was 13 years old when I went to a European Art School. Then I studied under some incredible artists and professors at Mount Allison University and the University of Newcastle in Australia! Since then, I have been making art professionally and exhibiting for almost 10 years!

When I'm not making art, I'm (a) ...

making inspiring films! As an actress, and now writing and producing also :)

Favourite book

It's a tie between The Great Dialogues of Plato and The Art Of Living: The Classical Mannual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness (Epictetus)

Favourite movie

3-way tie between Balto, The Lion King (original, of course!), and The Matrix! The Fifth Element is next on the list :)

What do you listen to when you work?

Music is a must when I'm creating! It ranges from classical, to electro swing, disco funk, and dance/pop/electro. Depending on what energies or mood I need for a particular piece!

Who do you consider a genius?

Leonardo Da Vinci - his art, his inventions, his scientific and engineering mind AND his compassion towards animals - he was a true genius in every sense of the word, and a man ahead of his time! We owe so much to his brilliance!
